Maraton Lađa — the race that moves the whole valley

~5 min read

Maraton Lađa is one of the most-attended sporting and cultural events in the entire Dubrovnik-Neretva County. For nearly three decades, every August, hundreds of rowers in traditional wooden boats race down the Neretva in an event that goes far beyond sport — it’s a celebration of identity, the river, and a way of life.

What is a lađa?

A lađa is a traditional wooden boat that has been used for centuries for fishing and transport on the Neretva. Narrow, stable, and fast, the lađa is a symbol of Neretva life. The marathon preserves this tradition by turning it into a competition that brings together the entire region.

The race

The main race runs from Metković through Opuzen to Ploče, covering a significant stretch of the Neretva River. Alongside the men’s marathon, there’s also the Maraton Lađarica — a women’s race covering 10 km from Metković to Opuzen. Speed trials determine starting positions, and the atmosphere on the river recalls a regatta.

More than a race

Maraton Lađa isn’t just a competition. The entire weekend comes alive — concerts, local food featuring Neretva specialties, family entertainment, and socialising that continues late into the night. The banks of the Neretva fill with spectators, and the atmosphere is a unique blend of sport, culture, and celebration.

Why come?

If you visit the Neretva Valley during Maraton Lađa, you’ll experience the region at its finest. It’s a chance to feel the passion and pride of the people who live along this river, to try local specialties like eel brudet with a glass of local wine, and to be part of something truly authentic.

Hotel MB and Hotel Narona are located in the very centre of Metković — at the starting line of the race. Book your stay early as rooms fill up fast.
